He rebuked her for not appreciating the honor of their task, but it seemed to go in one ear and out the other. That was the problem with the mafia princess, her father had instilled a little too much sense of superiority in her, and now the rest of them were having to deal with it. She insisted she wasn’t disappointed, seemingly forgetting she was talking to an empath.
Gia: Shouldn’t there be other representatives from the Red and Black Courts; show these guys that we’re a united front?
“That’s what this whole weekend is about. Escorting them from the airport is about getting a jumpstart on the other courts, and controlling the first impression.”
He explained, and then it was on to the ‘prank’, as they were calling it. Never mind that Zach had sensed bitter rage from the mini mob boss for years. Ever since they had seized power, in fact. Ever since her little lover had died. Zach had tried his hand at distracting her, initially. She was ripe for the taking, but too high maintenance. And that was how Zach learned that you don’t stick your dick inside crazy.
Naturally he withdrew, carefully. And warned his Queen. He had no proof that her rage was treacherous, and Gia had a psi-screen that blocked Cam’s probes quite well. So all these years they had been waiting for Gia to slip. Haleigh didn’t want to believe it, he knew. They had grown up with Gia, and as ruthless as Haleigh could be, she wasn’t like her mother so much that she murdered without cause. Gia was presumed innocent until proven guilty, and would likely be given the Hellfire Club’s version of ‘due process’.
She was already getting cut a huge amount of slack, by Haleigh allowing Zach to handle it. Still, his Queen was a do-whatever-it-takes kind of woman, so he knew he could go ‘weapons free’, so to speak. First he smothered her in guilt, and played along with her story, coaching her on how ill-advised the prank was. She stammered an apology, then looked out the window.
Zach moved in, and seized her with fear. He got a high from the way she went submissive. He told her if she wanted to survive, she’d do well on their mission, and impress the European men. He didn’t care if she fucked them in the seat right next to him, so long as it smoothed things over with Haleigh. He had a vested interest in keeping Haleigh happy, and he would do anything, and destroy anyone to make that happen. And now that Gia was compliant, he switched gears smoothly. He needed to win her over again. He wanted her to be on their side, truly. It would please his Queen the most if Gia turned out to be the loyal childhood friend that Haleigh THOUGHT she was.
“Gia...Bella Donna....”
He started, his Italian accent creeping back in when he used his native language, and he was all charm again. He brushed her hair back, gently. His gaze softened.
“Why do you sabotage yourself, darling? You could really excel on the White Court. You’re a bonafide mafiosa. The Queen values your presence, and what you bring to Hellfire with your business connections. How about you try to focus your efforts on Archer Fairchild? He fancies himself a mob boss too. Stroke his ego, strike up a friendship. It’ll cool the heat off, and lift your stock at home.”
