Heart Attack
There was alot of hype leading up to it. DURING it, there were alot of head scratching moments & (for me @ least) some tie-ins that could've been left out. The ending was...(again for me) anti-climatic in terms of what I expected & what would make sense but also kind of sad. There were alot of things that didn't make sense in the wrap up either.
Ultimately, I think this was just Bendis' convoluated way (as he is quite well known for) UNDOING what he & Quesada did w/ House of M/Decimation- destroying the mutant presence in Marvel. But Bendis REALLY cheapened the Phoenix & her meaning to the X-men in the way he went about it. He also took some characters (Cyclops in particular) to a point where I don't see how they could be redeemed & brought squarely back into the fold of their pockets of MU.
I was completely against Magik being part of the Phoenix 5 @ first...but of ALL of them, SHE'S the only one that emerged from that experience the least unscathed & her powers seemed to INCREASE from that experience. I must admit that it was twisted, yet fitting, the way she revealed to her brother, Colossus how she could have liberated him from the power of Cyttorak @ anytime but chose not to b/c she wanted him to understand what it was like being something closer to HER...& that "even 'snowflakes' burn in hell." After being tainted by Phoenix, losing that power...then Magik frees him of his "juggernaut" powers but reveals why she chose to wait so long to do it...NOW he wants her dead & vows to snap her neck w/ his own hands. That's QUITE a reversal in their dynamic.
One of my least favorite parts of this overwrought storyline was the Phoenix/Iron Fist tie in. That whole backstory just read so far fetched & weak. Wasn't Hope trained by Cable? Didn't RACHEL GREY become Phoenix III @ around the same age as Hope & SHE was able to handle/control it? I felt like that whole "find your center" crap w/ the Phoenix/Iron Fist tie in & Hope's "training" from Ironfist & SpiderMan was pointless. SPIDERMAN? REALLY?
:haha:
Among the other tie-ins that i LIKED were: SpiderWoman, Cage & Hawkeye fighting to escape Utopia & succeeding, only to realize they were still imprisoned & that Danger was running a psychic scenario loop, torturing them w/ their desperate desire to escape; The spotlight battles: Hope vs Scarlett Witch (Hope punches her in the face & knocks her to the ground, i LOVE IT!), Havok vs Captain America (Havok wins) SpiderWoman vs Dazzler (Dazzler wins), Domino vs Red Hulk(she knocks him out), Avengers' butler Jarvis vs Toad (Jarvis throws him out of a window LOL), IceMan vs IronFist (IceMan wins), SpiderWoman catfighting/wrestling w/ Storm, White Queen & Psylocke...& in a cute twist, it turns out that Pixie & Squirel Girl were playing w/ X-men & Avenger figurines the whole time, before finding out that the figurines were created by Puppet Master using mind control clay, one day before the start of the hostilities between the X-men & Avengers.
Ultimately, I think A v X was another overwrought, Bendis event, designed by Bendis to undo ANOTHER overwrought (& needless) Bendis event, designed by Bendis & to make way for "Marvel Now" & an age of the X-men now being ruind by Bendis just as much as the Avengers have been. Hello...silver age x-men now in the same timeline as mainstream!?
