HONOLULU – Tsunami waves swamped Hawaii beaches and brushed the U.S. western coast Friday but didn't immediately cause major damage after devastating Japan and sparking evacuations throughout the Pacific.

Raw video of a ship caught in the eye of a massive whirl pool effect in the ocean off the coast of japan that was created by the earthquake and tsunami. Other unedited, alarming footage of the disaster unfolding can be seen here.

Does anybody here have friends/family in Japan whether for military, traveling etc? Anybody here on the west coast?

My thoughts are with Japan and the Pacific Coast....I don't have any family or friends over in Japan, but my mom has a friend over in Honolulu. We actually lived with him for a couple of years when I was a baby. So of course i'm worried about him and all of Hawaii. But that raw footage is scary....i'm with BK. It's kinda hard not to think there's something going on with this planet.

the entire island of Japan was moved 8 feet by this earthquake and tsunami...the ENTIRE island...8 feet!? that is historic as it is scarey to try to fathom. i think we all might forget that forces of nature are BEYOND the power of any man, gov't or corporation.

i've got a dear friend who works for Boarder Patrol (via Dept. of Homeland Security) who lives out in Cali and is frequently on the coast itself. I've sent an email and text to his phone letting him know I'm thinking about him and asked him to get back with me just to let me know he's okay when he can. Assuming that he is, he's probably on the front line right now as they brace for impact of the wave.

the death toll has skyrocketed to 10,000 and apparently some entire small towns have been wiped off the map!

none of the news i'm reading though seems to want to say straight out if there have been any nuclear reactor meltdowns and what it might mean on a wide reaching scale.

this whole thing has changed the balance of the earth though, ive read that today.

Japan’s earthquake shifted balance of the planet

Last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan has actually moved the island closer to the United States and shifted the planet's axis

Man, Gov't's, Politicians and Corporations may THINK they are all powerfull and will reign forever, but MOTHER NATURE has the last word. :1900: #thatisall

one quake manged to shorten the day by 1.6 microseconds, that is more then a little terrifying
