Over 2/3rds of corporations pay NO federal corporate income tax

------------------

At a time when the gov't is starved for cash & revenue is desperately needed, once again, companies who flurished in America have turned their backs on their consumers in america in more than one way. they take the jobs, now they BREAK THE LAW & still they don't get penalized for it while average citizen would get raked across the coals for far less.

this "corporations are people" bullshit needs to be abolished. I'm glad that some ppl are moving toward that. cities in california & now NY have passed resolutions declaring corporations are NOT people & will not be treated as such.

Them paying more taxes just means higher prices and fewer jobs.

how does that explain the last decade & a half? they pay no taxes & still outsource. they're allowed to function under "laws" & regulations all together different than the rest of us. US- the ones who made their success possible by BUYING their products, working in their factories etc.

is this America for the PEOPLE or America for the CORPORATIONS?

It's just not that simple. It sound good, but it's just NOT.

Also, that's talking federal income tax only (the link isn't working so I can't read the article) and it could be that those companies have had losses or made donations to offset their fed tax or there may be government tax breaks for hiring - I don't know, but the answer to our problems is not simply to tax corporations and tax the rich. That's not going to do it.

52% of Americans don't pay federal income tax either, by the way.

of that 52 % some don't make enough to pay & others are @ an income level where they "qualify" for loopholes that you or I would go to JAIL for trying to use. & again...corporations are NOT people...so that's apples & oranges.

Vil...the companies (i can't fix the link from work but ill do it when i get to my lap top) mentioned are ones like GE or Goldman Sachs...are you gonna tell me that they had LOSSES!? LOL <<FAMILY FEUD BUZZER>> these companies are experiencing RECORD BREAKING PROFITS & they STILL don't pay their taxes. that's breaking the law & if it were anybody else...they'd be taken to task for it.

Yes. My brother in law works for GE and they've had tons of job cuts and other cutbacks. And frankly, that's 2 companies. If part of the 52% can't pay, then whose to say the majority of that number are posting losses? The point is, we don't know. We don't have the facts, all we have is a headline that looks good and tells people who's to blame for their problems.

The fact of the matter is, companies are not going to eat into their profits if they're forced to pay higher taxes. They'll make up the difference by outsourcing and cutting jobs and benefits. It's just a fact. Higher taxes is RARELY the solution.

Companies who evade taxes should be prosecuted - but the percentage doesn't in and of itself mean a thing. Again, there are a lot of other types of taxes other than federal. I would like to see the actual article later.

GE may have had tons of jobs & cut backs but if you reference the article I posted a few months ago about GE specifically...they've raked in profits of nearly 14 BILLION this past year alone & paid ZERO in taxes to the feds! So obviously even letting them get their way (they settled w/ the SEC who investigated them) doesnt keep the jobs here either. All they care about is their bottom line regardless & its not right that they turn their back on the place (& the people) that made their continued success possible! These companies will pay more to SETTLE charges of tax evasion than they will to actually PAY their fair share of taxes.

I'll fix the article this evening for sure. but in the meantime:

Hey, I'm happy to be proved wrong, I just don't have any facts and am wary of believing soundbytes or quick fixes. I'd still like to know just exactly who make up that 2/3, because a few big names a conspiracy does not make.

(Crap I just agreed with Obama about something lol...before I had the info)

Clearly from the link you posted GE is acting criminally, so yes, let's go after that. Let's close those loopholes - I'm all for expecting corporations to pay their fair share. BUT I still think just increasing taxes on corporations isn't the answer to the country's problems. Making everyone pay their FAIR share is more important. Overtaxing DOES still lead to job cuts and outsourcing.

And shutting down the lobbyists and PACs would be another good start. Burning Washington down and starting again might be the best solution lol (JK!)

Overtaxing never leads to job cuts.

If hiring is profitable then corporations do it if they are smart. If hiring is not profitable in the time frame thye are evaluating they do not.

The bigger issue is that corporations in this country are looking from quarter to quarter rather than long-term. For example, many companies who outsource end up doing worse because their target audience is HERE, IN A RECESSION, lol. any company that saves a few buck outsourcing only to harm their prime market is stupid and, unfortunately, the current crop of CEOs make s much that they only need to worry about the next 2-3 quarters TOPS.

We should go back to Clinton-era (or Reagan era ) taxes and hold there. When job creators create jobs, they can have their cushy Bush cuts back. And not until.

That is a somewhat simplistic evaluation of the situation. Hirings are made because companies can pay a worker less than they can make off of him. If there is demand then hiring should commence. Taxes have gone up and down for generations and there is not one IOTA of evidence that hiring is tied to it.

It could actually be argued that hiring would increase as companies would have to improve their bottom lines through production. As it is now there is no incentive to hire as the investor class is gaining their wealth through tax savings, choosing to sit on the trillion dollars Bush gave them the last 10 years rather than taking risks and forcing their companies to actually be productive.

it's all about CHEAP LABOR now. Taxes have nothing to do w/ it. These companies get away w/ murder when it comes to avoiding taxes & they still only care about their bottom line.

they outsource b/c labor overseas is cheaper & yet the consumers who bought their products & gave them success they now crave are left high & dry b/c they lost their jobs & can't afford to buy the shit anymore but they don't care. meanwhile customer service & quality of the product goes down the tubes but as long as those quarterly reports show exploding profits? who cares! they've got public relations teams & spin doctors to make it look good & they pay millions of $$ to make sure the loopholes stay in place (lobbyists) & if they get caught...they SETTLE their way out of any kind of accountability!

it's not right. WE have to pay our taxes...& we'll NEVER see the kind of money they make in our lifetimes. EVER. THEY should pay their fair share & put some of that money BACK into the country that made them possible!

That was not talking down to you or to anyone. The simple fact is that saying more taxes equals less money equals less jobs is indeed simplistic and fails to take not only history but a host of other valid factors into account. I do hope you will not withdraw from the conversation over this preceived slight; however, I refuse to be drawn into apologizing for a completely accurate analysis of the statement because offense was taken. I find that offense is often used when people disagree as an excuse to discontinue debate.

We BOTH know that you are a very intelligent individual. What would be condescending is if I simply allowed that comment to go by unchallenged because I somehow assumed that the reasoning it involves is the best you can do; we both know it is not.
