OK. It's now looking like enough of a reality to justify a movie thread, cool. I pray this will actually be good..

D.J. Caruso to Direct Y: The Last Man, Will Shia LaBeouf Be Next?

Posted on Monday, July 23rd, 2007 at 10:00 pm by: Peter Sciretta

Many people say Watchmen, but for me the greatest comic book series of all time is without a doubt, Brian K Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man. A big screen adaptation has been in the works since early 2006. New Line Cinema has finally tapped D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) to direct a film version based on a script by Carl Ellsworth (Red Eye, Disturbia). This is great news since the project had fallen into “development heck.” The hiring of Caruso is interesting because a few months ago it was rumored that Hollywood’s new golden star Shia LaBeouf was interested in starring in the film. And as you know, Caruso directed Shia in Disturbia. Could this be a set up for a big casting announcement at Comi-Con? The Transformers star doesn’t have much (if anything) officially lined up after Indiana Jones 4.

Y: The Last Man follows Yorick Brown, a young amateur escape artist, and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, the last two men on Earth. Something (speculated to be a plague) simultaneously kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome - including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm. Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men. Yorick goes on a mission to find his girlfriend Beth, who was on vacation in Australia.

The Y: The Last Man series will end (as planned) with a double sized issue #60 early next year.

I've been following the comic speratically but I'm liking its not the usual kind of title so i hope this movie will be just as good. the only thing I'm not sure how i would feel about Shia LaBeouf staring.

Yeah, I'm one of the freaks who's never seen a Shia LaBeouf movie, heh. He seems smart at least. And he's got good taste if he was lobbying to be in this flick. He's maybe just a little young yet to play Yorick. Can't wait to see who all lands the other roles.

hes not a bad actor he might be able to pull it off but he really is too young. Yorick is in his twenties right? no offense to Shia LaBeouf but he always looks about 16-17.

Seems like Yorick's just out of college when the story starts. He'll be about 27 when it ends I suppose. Wonder how much of the plot they're gonna strip out for the movie. Apparently, BKV's original script had about "70%" of the story intact.

what are they doing the first trade and what do they mean only 70% of the story is being preserved?

Here's what David Goyer said about Vaughan's script:

"We asked whether Vaughan would try to condense the entire series into a single movie. "No, the neat thing about his adaptation is that it's 70% the comic book, but he did a great job adapting it," Goyer replied. "He changed what needed to be changed. It still has that Brian K. Vaughan flavor, but it goes in a different direction, and the ending of the film in fact is different than the ending in the comic book will be."

That's pretty vague I guess.

And were you asking about trade paperbacks?
