Anyone? I know it's been hyped into the stratosphere by even the mainstream media at this point, but it's good, worth one's time. I'm caught up through vol 9. I just read the TPBs.

Apparently Brian K Vaughan is close to finishing off a movie script version, if he hasn't already. David Goyer would be producing. He's trying to convince the suits it's viable I guess, find a director.

You probably already know that I'm a huge fan. I'm a fan of Brian K. Vaughan, and Y is probably my all time favourite comic (granted I haven't read that many though).. It's clever and funny and interesting, plus lots of great female characters, especially Dr. Allison Mann whom I'm simply in love with.

And I really really hope they do make a movie out of it, 'cause it could be completely awesome..

Hey Epo, knew wouldn't pass up a Y thread, heh.

Y's definitely my fave comic as an adult. It's just the perfect combo of clever story, great characterizations, super fun dialogue. Even all the supporting characters are well-defined, even if they just have a few lines here and there.

And Pia's pencils are beautiful. Some people say the art's plain, or just average. I don't get that. It's gorgeous, I think. Muted, earthy colors, nice dull finish to the paper. And the characters have that classic, clean look that wouldn't be out of place in a comic from the 1940s.

I know exactly what you mean. And yeah at first I didn't find the art too interesting (probably 'cause I had just read Vaughan's Runaways and loved that kind of comic), but it really suits this type of "realistic" story, it all feels real etc. Which is one of the reasons I think this story could make a great movie.. Like the transision wouldn't be that big, but obviously it'd still need lots of changes story wise, etc. Mhm.

Yeah, it would make an amazing two or three seasons as a TV series. Can't wait to see how Vaughan manages to cram it into a feature film format.

I've heard rumors of Topher Grace as Yorick. That was a few years back now I guess. Shia Labeouf is apparently a huge fan, wishes to be in it. (I don't think I've ever even seen him on film, no idea if he'd work) I actually think Chris Evans, the guy who plays Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four movies has sort of the right attitude. He's almost too buff though.

Who to play Allison, 355...? That girl who played Rona on Buffy could be 355, if she were just a little older.

Vaughan could co-direct with Joss Whedon.

Haha that's true, I'd love a mini series or something like that. I mean I get that they have to cut some of the storylines, I just hope it doesn't become completely Yorick-centered – but I doubt Vaughan would do something that foolish; Y is, after all, about women.

Yorick is such a random guy, I mean he's kinda blah and I don't really care who plays him. Someone at the BVK forum suggested Milo Ventimiglia, and at first I thought that was an insane idea, but I actually think he could work. (Then again, yesterday when watching Aladdin, me and Joamna realized the animated Disney Aladdin looked and spoke exactly like Milo, it's all weird.)

I really wonder about 355 and Allison though. Indigo (Rona) might work I guess.. but yeah she still looks pretty young (when I've seen her in Weeds).

Allison is of course my baby and I can't really see anyone play her. People are suggesting Lucy Liu or Sandra oh – probably mainly 'cause they are the only Asian actresses they know – which imo is all wrong. They are also suggesting random like Japanese or Korean ones, that's just weird. I could maybe see Michelle Krusiec play her though.. but yeah, I'm not sure.

(Heh I'd love it if Joss had something to do with it, mhm.)

Yeah Milo, or Ryan Reynolds even, I could imagine as Yorick. I guess Yorick's blah, lol. I just relate to him the most personally. I see it all as sort of a coming-of-age story for the three main characters. They're all sort of evolving together - at least a little - throughout the journey.

I can understand why people might say Sandra Oh for Allison. Or Ming Na (from ER). She's maybe a little closer. Her character on that show actually wasn't that far off from Allison. They need someone who can play thoroughly Americanized, has the attitude. Plus the weird guilt-trips that lots of sons and daughters of immigrants have. Hmm.

Yeah I agree. I guess Allison doesn't change much until the later issues, it also takes a while until we really get to know her. Which I like about her.. 'cause I was kind of curious about her from the start.
Another character that always interested me is Alter (that's her name right? The Israeli soldier type? err)..

Really? Wow I so don't picture Allison as a Sandra Oh type, I think Sandra Oh has such a distinct appearance, and not at all like Allison, hmm.. I haven't seen the Ming Na person in anything but I guess look wise she'd be better...

Sandra Oh - appearance wise, no. Just something about her persona. But really, not a good choice. And yeah, Alter's compelling too. Geez. This movie's gonna have a cornucopia of great female roles (obviously).

From the slashfilm website, this sounds encouraging:

Shia LaBeouf Wants to Star in Y: The Last Man?

Posted on Thursday, April 26th, 2007 at 12:03 am by: Peter Sciretta

The box office success of Disturbia has made Shia LaBeouf a bankable A-list Hollywood movie star. JoBlo is now reporting that LaBeouf is hoping to be cast in the big screen adaptation of Y: The Last Man. I agree with Shia, Y: The Last Man is the best comic book series published today.

A big screen adaptation has been in the works since early 2006. It’s currently set-up at New Line Cinema.

“I finished the screenplay a few months ago. Everybody at New Line seemed to like it,” Vaughn said at the New York Comic Con. “For Hollywood, it’s either really fast or it’s really slow, and it’s really slow right now. I’ve done my job and it’s out to directors now and it could be totally out of my control after this.”

One would think that if Shia is interested, the project will quickly be elevated from “Development Heck” to a greenlight.

Y: The Last Man follows Yorick Brown, a young amateur escape artist, and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, the last two men on Earth. Something (speculated to be a plague) simultaneously kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome - including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm. Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men. Yorick goes on a mission to find his girlfriend Beth, who was on vacation in Australia.

The Y: The Last Man series will end (as planned) with a double sized issue #60 in January 2008.
