Nation Pauses to Reflect on 13th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks - NBC News

----------------------

It's been 13 years, but 9/11 is one of those "do you remember when" moments in all of our lives. We will never forget.

On that morning, I was actually late to work. I had overslept & so as I rushed out of the house, I was unaware of the story about a plane crashing into one of the twin towers as it was just breaking. I was hearing reports on the radio stations, but wasn't sure what was going on.

Once i got to work, that's when it became clear & most of my co-workers & I were watching the news on TV & saw the second plane hit the other tower.

Needless to say, no work was done that day & in fact, b/c we were in a fed gov't building, we were eventually evacuated, along w/ every other major gov't building in the city. The evacuation occurred after the towers collapsed. was happening across the nation as pretty much everyone was in a panic. I'll never forget being rushed down the stairs & having to take off my high heels as we were running.

Everything & everyone was effected, changed forever. I remember finally getting home & feeling such a sense of DREAD. Between phone calls, trying to check on everyone/ or answering phone calls from ppl asking me where I was, I was Standing on my front porch & watching the skies...expecting to see enemy planes flying overhead & raining down bombs. I wondered if this is how people in Europe had felt during the dawn of WW2 when Germany engaged in it's blitzkrieg.

I remember in the days/weeks that followed....members on Charmed boards, who played in the FGB vs ADA game, paused "in character" to express grief & mourning. Those of us in the ADA actually suspended whatever gameplay we were involved in, had our characters regroup @ club Venom & had our characters lighting candles , some even had their characters praying. It wasn't something we purposefully planned. Someone just posted reaction to the tragedy "in character" & others began following suit & it turned out to be a touching, emotional out pouring. Ill never forget that & I think it was unique that it happened w/in a board RPG setting.

I guess that the events on 9/11 hasn't have quite the same impact on me.
Being in Sweden I have always felt safe, even around the time of devestating events like 9/11.

Still remember where I was when I heard the news though.

I was out of town, working. Was listening to some stupid radio channel with a very silly host.
So when they first told the news me and my co-worker thought it was just a stupid joke.
When they later said that a second plan had crashed we actually said to each other that this is getting stupider by the second and still didn't belive it.

Think we then changed the station though to something more serious and it wasn't until we heard the same news there that we really understood that it was for real.

But even though we did listen to updates all through the day it didn't really hit me how huge it was until I got back to my hotel room and turned on the TV.
Seeing those towers, or rather the little that was left of them, was a real eye opener. It really shocked me. Was really not prepared for it despite hearing about it most of the day.

Still not sure why seeing it, and not just hearing about it, made such a difference.
But it really did.
