The companion series to AMC's "The Walking Dead" has discovered its first survivors.

Announced in September 2013, the spinoff created by Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson is set during the same zombie apocalypse as "The Walking Dead" but features new characters and new locations.

Deadline reports the series, "aka 'Cobalt,'" will center on a male divorced teacher and a female guidance counselor. Frank Dillane ("In the Heart of the Sea," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince") will play the woman's son, who's struggling with a drug problem, and Alycia Debnam Carey ("Into the Storm") her ambitious daughter.

The website notes Debnam Carey was previously cast in AMC's rejected sci-fi/fantasy pilot "Galyntine."

The cable channel ordered a pilot for the "Walking Dead" companion series in September. It will be executive produced by "The Walking Dead's" Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert, with Erickson serving as showrunner and pilot co-writer. Adam Davidson ("Hell on Wheels," "Community") will direct.

TWD is already boring as hell with all these separate groups, what's going to be new about this? So far it looks like the Walking Dead for teens.

I was not happy about the splintering of the main group mid way through season 4 & the arrival of so many new characters/groups, but I understand why it would happen. Still, few of the newer characters have drawn my care or concern. It just seems like the cast has become a bit bloated.

It's fair to entertain the idea that there are other groups trying to survive in this same timeline, but I'm not sure a spin-off is the best idea right now...& speaking of "TWD for teens"....Carl (Chandler Riggs) is widely hated by most adult fans of the show (me being among them lol) but apparently loved by the younger crowd...maybe they should move HIM into the spin off lol. wishful thinking on my part I know.

Oh that would be awesome. But they really should have killed Carl at the end of Season 3, just as Rick stepped into the boxcar he should have turned and seen Carl shot in the head just as they shut the door. But alas...

Yeah...no. I already call it being a flop lol.

But I agree, lets throw Carl over to the spinoff. :D

And Beth. No wait, SHE'S DEAD! :D

LOL!

I think the TPTB of the show are trying to do too much w/ this. It could end up hurting the show, kind of like how The Colby's hurt Dynasty. The idea of other groups of ppl trying to survive in the same continuity is plausible, but not necessary. The main group (what's left of it) comes across ppl all the time, some good, some bad, some demented. Longtime fans of the show are already complaining that there's so few of the original Atlanta group left.

Something I hadn't thought about until now, though, is that if Greg Nicotero is not involved in this one, then we don't have to have all the storylines and shots whose sole purpose is to show off the FX makeup. So this show might actually be better than the original is right now.
