Parthenon — Delilah’s suite
Delilah had big feelings about not being told things by the rest of the group. Haleigh was not in the mood to be sniped at for the discretionary choices of other people, so she asked Delilah how she functioned with such a chip on her shoulder. Delilah deflected, asking Haleigh how she functioned with her ‘infallibility complex’.
“Flawlessly.”
Haleigh quipped, her tone thick with sarcasm that made it evident she found the suggestion ludicrous. She posited that maybe no one liked to tell Delilah things because they didn’t like to face her disapproval. Delilah’s rebuttal was that they shouldn’t do things Delilah would disapprove of. Since that was neither a feasible strategy for operation nor an argument Haleigh wanted to have, she let it go. There were more important issues, like Delilah being unable to check on Alexia at will. Haleigh found that to be unacceptable and insisted she would make Ororo aware of the changes that needed to be made. Delilah asserted that Morgan had taken the position that Delilah should ‘just get over it’.
“I see. Would you rather resign to her decree than agree with me that she’s mistaken and that we should do everything in our aggregate power to rectify this problem?”
She posed rhetorically. She did not expect Delilah to answer and didn’t waste a second shifting to recruit Alexis through Ava. Delilah was skeptical that Alexis would help, but it didn’t hurt to try. Ava had been very successful at gaining allies during her time in Hellfire. Haleigh could hear the phone conversation just as easily as the NSA, and right away she knew it was time to tell Delilah about their recent move, before it became a point of contention, before she thought they were ‘keeping’ it from her. Haleigh briefed Delilah on their ascension and invited Delilah to join them. Ava got off the phone and gave Haleigh a look.
Ava: “Really?”
“Well we don’t want to work with Kelly, the bitch wanted to experiment on children and didn’t hesitate to drown her own daughter for personal gain.”
Delilah rolled her eyes, not even giving the Queen title suggestion consideration. Instead, she expressed her disapproval. Haleigh listened patiently as Delilah asked what they were thinking. She was currently thinking that Delilah was as adorably naive as Zach if she believed they were going to get Ava and Haleigh ‘out’ so easily. Delilah asked what the plan was, suggesting a staff memo that Hellfire was now a force for good. Haleigh could hear her mother laugh at that, and she couldn’t stop herself from smiling. It was an amusing idea, after all. Her smile faded as Delilah alleged Haleigh and Ava would be a danger to their allies.
Malice: You KNOW how to retaliate.
Haleigh didn’t flinch or cut a sharp look at Delilah, instead she took a moment to mitigate her own indignation. She had to detach, emotions would not help this discussion. She let Ava respond instead. Ava’s motives were centered on recovering Alek. Haleigh, on the other hand, was able to be a bit more objective. She wasn’t in love with Alek. She liked him well enough, and she owed him for all he had done for her sister. Furthermore, she wasn’t going to leave her sister to try and save him all by herself, not when her sister had literally gone to hell and back with her. But those were not the only things Haleigh was thinking about. Ava highlighted the REAL problem when she mentioned that Helena attempting to reassert control of Hellfire would make the last battle look like Disneyland. Haleigh, now calm and collected again, uncrossed her arms.
“You want to know what we’re thinking? We’re thinking about the situation we’ve found ourselves in. Morgan got SHOT, Blaze almost DROWNED, Nic lost HALF his powers, Cass lost her LIFE, and Cameron’s in a fucking COMA.”
Haleigh started, delivering the casualty report with measured composure until she got to Cameron, where she almost lost her cool. She paused to regain self control before her mother could make another helpful suggestion.
“We haven’t disregarded what you went through in the least. The Birds paid a high price as well, we understand and appreciate that, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was an operation conducted under a complete misapprehension of the likely outcome. It’s like you all thought you were going to come in there and kill the entire Inner Circle and all the Queens and we were going to be free and nobody would be hurt and everything was going to be sunshine and puppies.”
She added without spite.
“Now I’ll give credit where credit’s due. You had significant impact. You hit hard and fast and burned the place down. You delivered us one HELL of an opportunity. The Queens are on the ropes. The rest, the ones that survived, are confused and reeling. If we want your plan to have it’s most successful outcome, then we need to be aggressive. Our PLAN must be to keep the Queens from reestablishing their control. No, Hellfire’s not going to be a force for good. It’s an organization full of racketeers, murderers, and corrupt power players.”
She stated neutrally, and then she paused to allow Delilah a chance to make some snide comment that she assumed was coming. It was best to let Delilah express her anger. It would facilitate the healing process.
“The difference is, with US at the helm, we get to pick the targets. We get to design the operations and direct the scope. So NO, our allies shouldn’t worry, because WE have our personal agency back.”
