Do you consider any co-workers to be your FRIENDS?

Do you participate in office parties or avoid them? why or why not?

do you care what ppl think if you do avoid them?

Well I didn't care what people thought if I avoided them and it pretty much got me fired (though I was avoiding them because I was taking the bus to work and there were only like 2 in the evening, so I had pretty much no choice).

why did it get you fired??

I do not attend office functions nor do i explain myself as to why. just b/c i work here doesnt mean i have to break bread w/ ppl i can't stand. everytime there's an email about something, i just opt out.

I don't consider any co-workers I have "friends" either...i dont think its a smart thing to do.

i read something somewhere that said working adults in america spend the MAJORITY of their time @ work w/ their coworkers & that's why there's so much emphasis on relationships there etc. ppl bring their drama from home to work & vice versa & some ppl really "get their life" @ work trying to be bigger/badder than they are outside of work. I dont have time for that b.s.

it's brought me into conflict w/ ppl before. i've proven in the past that i'd sooner leave a job than put up w/ shit that makes me uncomfortable.

I wasn't exactly fired as much as pushed out. It was clear that they wanted to move the girl from another team who went out drinking with my boss all the time onto his team, and that meant I was out.

In my old firm which was much larger then yes I did consider them friends, we would go out quite a lot together at nights. I switched to a smaller firm and I still meet my old friends for lunch.

My newer firm I consider them colleagues, I exchange texts with one of the girls during matches (we are both tennis fans) but other than that no. Perhaps because it is a smaller firm and also all but one is married and two have kids on the way!

We don't really have regular nights out, again because of the dynamics in the office but I organise things like bake offs and we do lunches and things. I do consider them friends but I have different levels of friends and their place in my life.

As you say, we spend a lot of time with people we work with, so it is important to get along, you don't want to spend the majority of your time in a hostile environment as it isn't healthy.

I usually attend work functions. I usually get along good with my colleagues, and most of the time we throw a party we all end up having a great time (chef's usually do :D)

I consider some of my colleagues to be friends, and i still keep in touch and occasionally meet up with old colleagues of mine.

I manage to avoid/keep the work drama to a minimum. Not really on bad terms with anyone at work, i like most of my colleagues, those i dislike i just ignore unless there is something work related they need me for or vice versa.

This is a very timely issue. With more people vying for fewer jobs you see a lot of this personal stuff leaking into the workplace.

I can tell you now, this situation is ruining my current workplace as someone in a position to review science work is unqualified overall, but she is protected by her boss who is a real-life friend.
