24-Year-Old Gets 3 Life Terms in Prison for Witnessing a Drug Deal: The Ugly Truth of Mandatory Drug Sentencing | Drugs | AlterNet

--------------------

this is absurd!

mandatory drug sentencing is a failed policy (as is "the war on drugs") & it's time to put an end to it. this policy overwhelmingly targets poor people & minorities. I read a startling statistic last year from the Justice Department that said whites use illegal drugs @ a rate 5X that of blacks & yet blacks are penalized 13X more often than whites for the same offense.

it clogs the court system & wastes tax payer money but @ the same time it supports the growing prison industrial complex that several presidents in the past warned against allowing to take root.

making marijuana legal would go a long way in putting an end to this & that itself would generate massive revenue for local & state gov't. Our neighbor to the north, Canada legalized marijuana (if i recall correctly) & there was no cataclysm or earth shattering reproccusion from that.

It would certainly make it much easier, if marijuana was legalized people who do use it would have a much easier time.
No more dealings w/ shady people, it would happene legally over a counter, not in a unsafe enviroment.
You could argue that it would open up for more "abuse" of it and that could lead to several side effects, but i think that if you want it enough, then you will probably do it legal or not.
Also this would probably lead to "safer" drugs, not something you have no way of knowing what it could be mixed with.
