Ken Jennings Jokes About 'Jeopardy!' Loss and Ends the Show With Clever 'Simpsons' Quote

By Lindsay Robertson, The Set | Thursday, February 17, 2011,

Well, it's all over and IBM's Watson won a million dollars for charity. A predictable ending to a fun, if not roller-coastery "Jeopardy!" event. (I'm sure the show is hoping to keep some of their millions of new viewers for tonight's annual Teen Tournament.) The most interesting part of last night's final show wasn't the computer's triumphant win, however. It was a joke, by Ken Jennings, a human! (And turns out, he's full of jokes about Watson.)

Realizing neither he nor Brad Rutter could possibly beat Watson at the final "Final Jeopardy," Jennings added a little note to his correct answer:

The line is, of course, from a classic Season Five (1994) "Simpsons" episode, "Deep Space Homer," in which humanity appears to be threatened by a race of giant ants. News anchor Kent Brockman reports the news solemnly, and then takes a surprising turn. It's still really funny so watch it again, for the first time:

Despite moments where it looked like he was about to throw the buzzer at Watson (and on last night's show, he made the inevitable "unplugging Watson" quip), Jennings has had a great sense of humor about the entire thing. Yesterday, in a very funny essay about his Watson experience for Slate called "My Puny Human Brain," Jennings joked that "Watson has lots in common with a top-ranked human 'Jeopardy!' player: It's very smart, very fast, speaks in an uneven monotone, and has never known the touch of a woman."

So we humans, about to be enslaved by robots, can at least thank Ken Jennings for taking us out with humor and class. (Interestingly, "The Simpsons" was the answer to a clue earlier in the same game. But, of course, it was Watson who got it right.)
