Is Lady Gaga's new single a Madonna ripoff?
proxy.php

Is Lady Gaga blatantly ripping off or (as some call it) "swagger-jacking" Madonna's style again? Some critics think so. Her latest single, "Born this way" is getting mostly positive response.

I personally havent heard it yet but IF so many people are already saying it sounds like "Express yourself"... makes me wonder what I'm in store for when I finally DO hear it.

Maybe Grace Jones wasnt too harsh after all when she dismissed Gaga as "a copy cat with no originality?"

Has anyone here heard the new song yet?

LOL, my mom was telling me a couple weeks ago how she thought Lady Gaga was a mix of Elton John and Madonna with the crazy costumes and cone bras.

madonna's brother blasted lady gaga last night, calling her a copycat. so a radio station down here was discussing this topic and had a poll on their website for what listeners thought. they played "born this way" and then "express yourself", people called in saying the similarities were more than a few. the dj's tried to remain objective but then one of them played both songs together in a (i admit it was cool sounding) MASH UP...and both dj's were kinda speechless at how seamless they ran together. there was no mixing or editing, just playing at the same time.

they had the same key, tempo, lyric structure (not to mention similar theme) , bridge etc. and the dj's were like ..."um yeah...that kinda answers the question right there."

When I first heard the song the first thing that popped into my head was Express Yourself with a hint of Vogue. It's definitely very similar, but I still love the song and the message.

I think people are just so hung up on the "copycat" factor. So what if some of her music is similar to Madonna, David Bowe, Queen, etc? No one's music is going to be completely original, especially when working with similar producers and/or writers. However I do think that Lady Gaga deserves props for stepping outside of the "pretty" box Hollywood puts entertainers in and does her own thing. I DO think she is original, even if some of what she does is reminiscent of other artists.

Well I think people should be original instead of copying someone else's formula for success, if they want to deserve being called a 'superstar'.

Gaga CAN write, sing and is very creative in her own right. She has songs to proove that such as Love Game/DiscoStick & Bad Romance.

My growing problem with her is that MANY times when she's directly asked what influence Madonna has had on her or how she feels a connection to Madonna etc, she ALWAYS replys something to the effect of she's BEYOND Madonna (and always says "no offense/disrespect intended" which makes me wonder ...if she wasnt trying to do that why would she cap off those statements that way everytime) OR that she's "taking what Madonna did to a whole new level..."

um...i've YET to see that. I'm just saying. Don't come on the scene swagger jacking and then pass it off as all YOUR creation. Madonna blazed the trail that Gaga is riding down in her egg now.

To me, what's happening is that she's simply catching her generation(s) the way Madonna caught her's. But when Madonna did all the stuff these girls do NOW as a calculated formula, it WASNT. It was she doing everything she could to push and break boundaries. Gaga is like this walking "nod" to Cher, Madonna and Grace Jones. and while she has some talent (unlike Beyonce)...she shouldnt be as arrogant as she sounds in these interviews.

I really don't think she's copying anyone's formula for success. But I guess that's just me. I sort of look at it as, Cher was really the first true original of her craft. Then came Madonna, who was just as ground breaking and boundary crossing as Cher. Some things between them may have even been compared as being similar, but they were original in their own right and made a name for themselves. Same thing with Lady Gaga. She has similarities with Cher and Madonna, yet she's different in her own right and paving a career for herself. The same could be said about David Bowie influencing Boy George who obviously influenced Adam Lambert. They're all original in their own right but similar as well...if that makes sense lol.

I do agree that she shouldn't be arrogant when it comes to questions about Madonna and how she's influenced Lady Gaga, but other than that, I really don't see the big deal.

I just don't see her music as anything special - and if she wasn't doing her outlandish behavior schtick, she'd be a one hit wonder we'd have forgotten about in 5 years.

you know, even as i wrote what i wrote earlier, I was thinking...dammit, i should backtrack and ammend my statement to say CHER blazed the trail and Madonna opened the flood gates. So I definately must stand corrected on that lol.

Im not saying i "hate" Gaga or anything but i AM disappointed in her responses about Madonna because without Maddy, Gaga would be hard pressed to be doing what she's doing now.

I love Love Game/DiscoStick and Bad romance. so far those are my top to Gaga hits ever. I'm curious to see what she'll do next BUT by no means will I get on board the "she's better than madonna" band wagon. not saying YOU have either. Just noticing what some of these kids today think about the subject.

When I heard "Born this way" played simultaneously with "Express Yourself" i was stunned at how they seamlessly overlapped. that alone suggests more than an "incidental" similarity between the two. It pissed me off a little bit lol but most madonna fans i know are "territorial" so I could chalk it up to that.

If Gaga can stop being so arrogant and trying to pretend like she's not influenced/heavily borrowing from Madonna, I'll be fine with that.

I'm a fan of both Madonna and Lady Gaga. And I think the reason why I like Lady Gaga so much is because she does remind me of Madonna with her out of the box entertainment and ability to sing AND perform. She takes chances, doesn't give a shit what people think of her, and makes catchy music. How could I hate that? LOL

However I do understand both view points on the matter. :)

How funny that we were talking about Gaga's remarks on Madonna! I just watched her interview with Jay Leno and he asked her what she thought about everyone comparing her new song to Madonna's Express Yourself and just Madonna in general. This was her response:

"There is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me. I am the hugest fan personally and professionally," says Gaga. "Well, the good news is that I got an e-mail from her people, and her sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single, and if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be."

i couldnt be THAT much of a coincidence. :sure:

Gaga needs to come back with her own shit next time. She has the capability....this song to me was a major mistep on her part. she "borrowed' as much as she could without getting into trouble for "sampling" without permission.
