HBO will team with BBC2 to produce a new miniseries set in ancient Rome, though no talent has yet been attached to the project. The epic storyline will be based on Robert Graves novels I, Claudius: From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius Born 10 B.C. Murdered And Deified A.D. 54, and Claudius The God: And His Wife Messalina. The series will follow Caligula as he escapes the power plays, machinations and backstabbing of the Roman Empire to become its emperor. Graves' work was previously adapted in the 1976 miniseries starring Derek Jacobi in the titular role, Brian Blessed as Augustus and John Hurt as Caligula. Executive Producers Jane Tranter and Anne Thomopooulos are no strangers to the historical drama - they also executive produced HBO's fantabulous Rome series.
