I'm not usually around these parts but i thought i drop in ;)

Anyone have any cover songs they like. I know some people give them a bad rap but when its well done an old song can be completely reinvented so any covers you feel were done particularly well?
Me personally:

Nightwish's cover of the Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley Phantom of the Opera http://youtube.com/watch?v=R1WqtV7GBCg

[Christine (Tarja):]
In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came,
that voice which calls to me,
and speaks my name.
And do I dream again? For now I find
the phantom of the opera is there
inside my mind.

[Phantom (Marco):]
Sing once again with me our strange duet;
my power over you grows stronger yet.
And though you turn from me to glance behind,
the phantom of the opera is there
inside your mind.

Tarja Turunen's cover of Alice Cooper's Poison http://youtube.com/watch?v=k5CmrO_XZwM

After Forever's cover of Iron Maiden's The Evil That Men Do http://youtube.com/watch?v=GkGEaMin3dI

they don't have to be metal or symphonic like my chooses :)

Well, Whitney Houston reached a level in her career in large part because of a cover that she did.... "I will always love you", which was a Dolly Parton original. the two sound NOTHING alike and the song has become more associated with Whitney even though Dolly originally wrote and sang it.

Whitney ALSO covered Chaka Khan's soulfull, gritty smash, "I'm every woman" and that too has become arguably more associated with Whitney. I LOVE Whitney's version but i still rock Chaka's too.

Madonna's tender cover of Marvin Gaye's "I want you" is another of my favorites (among other reasons, it was one of three songs that was playing the night I ...became NO LONGER a virgin :D).

I dough most people who hear that song now will even think to associate it with Chaka Khan.

When it comes to vocalist i have a special place in my heart for Tarja. I loved her when she was in Nightwish and followed her when she left the band and when solo. Sharon den Adel shes an incredible vocalist too. I still want to see her live.

Cool thread, BK. :D :xyxthumbs:

I don't know the other two songs you posted since I'm at home at the moment. So I can't click on them until I get to work where I have high speed.

But, I have heard of the Phantom cover on Pandora Radio that I listen to. I really wasn't impressed by it though. I liked the movie version the best but its not bad, its decent.

Counting Crows - Big yellow taxi was originally a Joni Mitchell song but I really liked this version much better. Its got a perky beat to it I like and the vocals are decent. You can't help but grin when it plays, at least for me.

No Doubt - Its my life was another good song I enjoyed the cover of from Talk Talk. A faster beat than the original more slower version.

Aretha Franklin - I'm not much a fan of hers but her cover of Otis Redding Respect was cool! I think she got a lot of kids to remember how to correctly spell the word too lol.

Soft Cell
- Their cover version of Tainted Love always appealed to me back when I originally heard it. Again a little more edgy than Gloria Jones' version.

Whitney Houson - I also have to agree with Farrah for both of her songs that she's covered. :D

Aretha's cover of this song was so sublime that Rolling Stone lists it as number 5 among the "200 most important songs of all time"....Number 5!!! that's pretty damn impressive.

agreed. this song was so far out and edgy. it was very catchy too. i remember everyone dancing to it on American Bandstand on several episodes back in 1981. I especially like the part in the extended version where they do a little homage to the Supreme's "baby, baby...where did our love go".

Well i'm not sure if this is considered actual 'cover songs' because they're from American Idol....but oh well lol.

David Cook - He's from American Idol and he did this fantastic cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean". It's soooooooo good in my opinion....and usually people can't do Michael Jackson's songs justice.

He also did Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby" which I loved better than the original. I loved his rock twist to it and I could totally picture his cover on a romantic movie soundtrack or something. [can you tell who i'm rooting for? :D]

Marylin Manson - He's done a few cover songs, but I really love "I Put A Spell On You". The arrangement is kick ass and he definitely made it more hardcore rock than the original. [sorry about the weird video, i just grabbed the first version i found on youtube lol]

A Perfect Circle - They did a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" which is an iconic song obviously. While I do think John Lennon's version can't ever be topped, I think A Perfect Circle really made the song their own by bringing in the 'darker' elements to it. I really like it.

David Archuleta - He also did a cover of "Imagine" while on American Idol, and it was by far one of the best performances i've seen on that show. It's just absolutely beautiful.

I have a few covers of songs that I like, sometimes more than the original...

Lindsay Lohan - Edge of Seventeen - Now I know alot of you will think it would be awful but her second album was not bad at all and this was a really good cover, it was a little jazzed up and soft spoken. I liked it alot.

India Arie - Heart of the Matter - While I do love Don Henley I loved this song so much. India's cover is just so amazing and heartfelt like everything that she does and it took me a few listens before I even realized that it was a cover. SO good! Can't say enough about it.

Katy Perry - Use Your Love - Okay I don't know who the original singer is but it's the song that goes "I just wanna use your love...TONIGHT.... I don't wanna lose your love TONIGHT!" It was a hair band song from the 80's but her cover is kind of awesome and I absolutely love it, kind of a different perspective when a chick sings it.

Renee Goldsberry - Ain't No Way - While I LOVE Aretha's version of this song, awhile back I stumbled upon a youtube video of her singing that song and I loved it so much I made it into an MP3 and put it on my iPod. I really love how different their voices are but the emotion is still there. A really great version.

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U - Even though Prince sang the original, I would say that 95% of people don't know that and think that Sinead is the original singer. This is one of those songs that you just turn up full blast when you are alone in your car and pour your soul out! LOL

Jesse McCartney - Buy You A Drank - Okay so this is normally a rap song done by T-Pain and others but Jesse did a cover of it for some Yahoo! event thing and I loved it so much that I put it on my Myspace for like two months. It is so different and yet so damn sexy!
