From an acquaintance's blog, I saw this article & decided to read it.
Black Student Sparks Debate With Confederate Flag Breaking News Views on BlackMediaScoop
------------
MY reaction is that this young man is naive. The confederate flag/motif is not some benign symbol of "southern pride". & I'm a WHITE person saying this.
The "pride" he refers to points to an era where slavery was an industry & that "free labor" afforded southerners & other industries that were prominent @ that time alot of profits. sure the south had "pride" then b/c @ that time their cotton industry was the envy of the world & their exports of it were massive BUT all of that came on the backs of the SLAVES that were brought here, regarded & treated as PROPERTY (which meant they could be handled/abused any way their 'master' saw fit).
That's like asking a jew or survivor of the holocaust not to have a kneejerk reaction to seeing a swastika, a nazi symbol. i've had some ppl argue that the symbol was hijacked & that its origin is that of an egyptian cross. well fine...for ppl who lived in the age of the egyptians, it was a benign thing. for anyone living in the 20th century up till now? there's a totally different perception about it & I think it's a little ridiculous to expect anyone to simply go along w/ that in this day & age.
this young man needs to grow up & learn a little more about american history, southern history & LIFE.
Your thoughts?
