1st ebola diagnosis in the U.S.

Scores possibly exposed to U.S. Ebola patient; four isolated

Scores possibly exposed to U.S. Ebola patient; four isolated

------------------------

More than 80 people had direct or indirect contact with the first person to be diagnosed with the deadly Ebola virus in the United States, health officials said Thursday, as four members of the patient's family were quarantined as a precaution.

Dallas County officials said 12 to 18 people had direct contact with the Texas patient, and they in turn had contact with scores of others. All were being monitored and none had shown any symptoms.

A top health official urged U.S. hospitals to heed lessons from Dallas, where a hospital initially sent the ailing patient home, despite information that he had recently visited West Africa, potentially exposing more people to the virus.

 Yesterday when I was listening to the CDC official attemping to downplay fears & concerns, I could tell he was just blowing smoke & here's an indication of that :sure:

Another good reason not to live in Texas
though on the plus side its not like its airborne so how many people are coming in contact with blood, spit, vomit or sweat of an infected person

unless, of course, it mutates... :erm: which CAN happen & each time health officials have been asked about it so far, they've been less than forth coming in their response about the likely hood of the virus mutating due to its rapid spread.

. . . thanks for adding that to my nightmares :worry:

2nd ebola diagnosis in TX!

Texas healthcare worker diagnosed with Ebola as CDC suggests breach of safety protocol

--------------------------------

So the official "blame" for this 2nd case is the hospital not following CDC protocol on handling patients w/ the disease. Again, while do i feel like there's more to this than what's being reported? Also, this healthcare worker has a pet in his/her apartment & while he/she is in isolation, authorities said THEY will "take care of it"...I wonder if that means they'll euthanize it like they did the dog who belonged to the nurse in spain that was diagnosed w/ ebloa?

On another note, This morning, while listening to a report about this on NPR, they made mention of a passenger on an airplane that became "quite ill" & the plane was diverted to NASHVILLE BNA International airport, & that the person was now a patient @ Vanderbilt hospital while the passengers on board the plane were quarantined for 3 hrs. Health officials in TN are claiming they are just being proactive

I'm so sick of how scared everybody is of this. If handled properly...we are an advanced enough nation that this shouldn't even be that big of an issue. Everybody is losing their shit at Obama for not doing enough or not responding quickly enough...

Funny...Reagan let nearly 24,000 people die of AIDS before he did anything, and somehow Obama's swift reaction to THREE CASES of Ebola is not enough?! ---->! NEXT!

Thank you so much for saying this!

I hate how everybody is freaking out over this as well. We are North America, people, NOT a third-world country like Liberia.

I agree that blaming Obama for this is definitely nonsense. The CDC had been severely defunded in recent years by a republican dominated congress, the republicans ALSO have continuously blocked Obama's Surgeon General appointment. The Surgeon General is the one who should be @ the head of the response to the Ebola scare....not some recently installed "Ebola czar" who is little more than a media figure head.

You make a good point about Reagan. He didnt even want to acknowledge AIDS as a health crisis. He was hoping it would "remain a gay man's issue", as the religious right was trying to frame it as "god's punishment of gays" . Very irresponsible, very sad. Obama hasn't done anything like that w/ this ebola issue.

I STILL feel like we're not being told everything, & that not enough accurate information is being shared to assuage public fears. Which is not unlike what happened when the AIDS crisis was first reported.
